2002 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir

Elegant, pure and beautifully detailed high-toned red fruit aromas merge into complex and exceptionally spicy medium full flavors that display under tones of licorice and clove. There is abundant midpalate sap to buffer the robust, powerful and tight tannins yet this is a highly seductive effort as the finish possesses a dust and a velvet quality. This is a first rate effort with outstanding concentration with just a hint of finishing warmth. 92/2008+ Allan Meadows. Drink: 2008+

2002 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir

Harry Peterson-Nedry, one of the founding partners of Chehalem, is the sole owner of this winery. Located on the crest of Ribbon Ridge, outside of Newburg, its 37 acres of vineyards (Ridgecrest) have long been the source of some of Chehalem’s finest wines. His vineyard having attained maturity (the vines are now 24 years old), Peterson-Nedry has decided to launch his own private label. The 2002 Pinot Noir is a superb debut. Medium to dark ruby-colored it offers aromatic as well as flavor profiles packed with lush blackberries, assorted dark fruit, and chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, this is a big, dense, powerful Pinot of considerable concentration, depth, and length. A slight trace of alcoholic warmth can be discerned in its finish. Projected maturity: 2006-2014.

2003 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir

A high-toned, rather mentholated nose of earthy dark berry fruit aromas lead to very ripe plum and mocha-infused flavors that are rich, full and sweet while possessing ample volume and solid length. This is not a particularly elegant wine and certainly not in the league of the terrific 2002 but it carries its elevated alcohol surprisingly well as the balance is actually quite good. While this could be approached now, it will benefit from 2 to 3 years in the cellar. Drink: 2008+ (Issue 20)

2004 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir

A deftly oaked and very ripe as well as highly expressive nose of elegant red, blue and violet pinot aromas nuanced by hints of oak spice and anise merges into rich, full, sweet and mouth coating flavors that manage to retain a lovely sense of detail and solid overall balance though there is noticeable finishing warmth on the persistent finish. This is a generous yet relatively refined effort with good punch and freshness and the warmth isn’t really enough to detract from the sense of harmony though neither is it invisible. Drink: 2009+ (Issue 24)

2015 RR Wines Pinot Noir · Ridgecrest Vineyard

The 2015 Pinot Noir Ridgecrest Vineyard displays a pale to medium ruby-purple color and nose of baked cherries, warm cranberries and dried lavender with hints of dusty earth and Provence herbs. Fine and refreshing on the medium-bodied palate, it has a solid frame of chewy tannins and plenty of expressive red berry and earth flavors, finishing with great persistence.

2003 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir

The powerful aromas of the 2003 Pinot Noir RR Ridgecrest Vineyards expose creamy red cherries, zesty black cherries, and candied blackberries. A concentrated, medium to full-bodied effort, it boasts a structured character replete with peppery, spicy red as well as black cherries. It should be enjoyed between 2008 and 2013.

2004 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir

Though light in color and potentially an early drinker (two traits that are common for 2004 Oregon Pinots), the 2004 Pinot Noir RR Ridgecrest Vineyards is outstanding. Its superb aromatics display Asian spices, red cherries, plums, and candied black cherries. This medium to full-bodied effort is rich, dense, well-balanced, and sappy. A concentrated wine, it boasts considerable cherry-dominated fruit in its long character. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.

2006 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir

The 2006 RR was sourced from the Ridgecrest Vineyard. It offers an enticing nose of spice box, smoke, and red and black fruits followed by a dense, full-bodied, structured wine. The flavors are savory and sweet with plenty of spice leading to a long, pure finish. Give it 3-4 years in the cellar and drink it through 2021.

2007 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir

The 2007 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards exemplifies the elegance that could be attained in that challenging year. Coming in at only 13.0% alcohol, it proffers terroir-driven aromas, lots of spice, and enticing red fruit aromas. On the palate more spice notes emerge along with a vibrant underpinning of acidity. This nicely proportioned offering is likely to see its 15th birthday in fine form.

2008 Pinot Noir RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Vineyards Ribbon Ridge

The still unreleased 2008 Pinot Noir RR Ridgecrest Vineyard gives up a superb nose of sandalwood, smoke, blue fruits, plum, and spice notes. Already complex, it exhibits outstanding volume, sappy flavors, impeccable balance, and a lengthy, seamless finish. Drink this beauty from 2014 to 2028.

2009 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir

Vivid ruby-red. A heady bouquet evokes candied red and dark berries, cola, incense and dried rose. Ripe and fleshy on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, offering intense black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a supple texture. Dusty tannins add shape to the long, gently sweet, smoky finish.

2010 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir

The 2010 Pinot Noir RR represents essentially the barrels from Ridgecrest and Wind Ridge deemed reserve quality that still remain once those that display the optimum finesse and refinement of structure have been chosen to inform the corresponding Reserve bottling. As such, the RR is a more powerful and obviously structured wine, but in this instance no less dominated by tart red berries and rhubarb. There is some suggestion of carnal depth and there is energy and impressive grip to the finish. But this lacks the textural polish, lift, or the dynamic complexity of the corresponding Reserve bottling. It will be interesting, though, to compare their evolution from bottle over the next decade or so. August 2012.

90

2011 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir

The nose shows impressive clarity with plenty of black cherries, violet and blood-orange scents, while the palate is underpinned by a keen line of acidity and plenty of spice toward the energetic finish. It lacks some finesse and poise on the finish, but I would be interested to revisit this in say, 12 month’s time. Drink 2016-22. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Neal Martin, March, 2015

2005 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir

Pale red. Rather wild cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by smoked meat, minerals and licorice… Chewy bitter cherry flavor offers excellent depth, with a strong spicy overtone mounting with air. For all its flavor impact the wine is light to medium in body, with very good mineral snap and finishing sweetness.

92

2006 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir

Saturated red color. Cherry-cola, blackberry and rose on the nose. Vibrant red and dark berry flavors are given depth by sweet cola and licorice qualities and framed by velvety tannins. Suavely blends richness with vivacity and finishes with echoes of sweet dark berries and candied flowers. This is really sexy.

2008 Pinot Noir RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Ribbon Ridge

Deep, bright red.Aromas of black raspberry, Asian spices and cola, with slow-building floral character.Sappy and deeply pitched, offering lush dark berry flavors that pick up spiciness with air. Brighter and nervier on the finish, which shows outstanding energy and persistence.

2009 Pinot Noir RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Ribbon Ridge

Smoky notes of black tea along with resin and brown spices certainly help serve for some complexity, of which there may also be more in time. … 2009 Pinot Noir RR prickles surprisingly in the nose with its suggestions of red currant, rhubarb, horseradish, and conifer resin. The red berries and rhubarb might come off as very lightly cooked on the palate, as well as vanilla-tinged, but this is still far brighter than one would expect of a 2009. Stony notes add an element of intrigue if also of austerity, assuaged by the refinement of tannin and consequent silken texture flatteringly on display here as well. This formidably persistent Pinot needs time, and will, I imagine, be worth following for at least the better part of a decade.

2010 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir (Ribbon Ridge)

Bright ruby-red. Highly perfumed bouquet combines fresh raspberry, cherry-cola, succulent herbs and potpourri. Densely packed and sweet but also sharply focused, with a sexy floral quality to its flavors of black raspberry, chocolate ganache and spicecake. Impressively silky and broad but lively pinot, finishing with smooth tannins and strong floral persistence. July/Aug 2013.

2012 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir (Ribbon Ridge)

Bright Ruby. Sexy smoke- and spic-accented aromas of black raspberry, cola and pungent flowers, with a mineral element adding vivacity.  Pliant, expansive red and dark berry flavors stain the palate, showing outstanding clarity and back-end lift. Combines power and finesse deftly and closes on a spice note, with smooth tannins coming in late to add grip. Drinking window 2018-2023. $79 retail. Vinous – Josh Raynolds – October, 2015

2009 RR Pinot Noir (Ribbon Ridge)

A special, 25th anniversary bottling, this is a knockout. Dark, smoky and tannic, this has a deep, black fruit flavor, threaded with rich streaks of licorice, coffee and chocolate. Further detail comes in the form of peppery herb. This is thick, muscular and integrated. Editors’ Choice.

2010 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir (Ribbon Ridge)

Perhaps a bit more time in barrel differentiates this from the equally-good (Chehalem) Reserve. This is a smooth, supple, deeply-fruited wine, loaded with layers of black cherry, cola and sandalwood. Milk chocolatey tannins roll through the finish, smooth as silk, lingering and luscious. December 2013. abv: 13.1%

2009 RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Ribbon Ridge Pinot Noir

From the best lots of Chehalem’s oldest vineyard, this vinous red lays out a range of scents that feels at once natural and wholly exotic; floral and musky, rose petal here, plum skin there, earth and tanbark grounding it. The flavors might be fruit driven but it’s more skin than flesh, the plum and black cherry as much savory as sweet. That fruit skin firmness informs its finish and will certainly provide longevity. (578 cases). Oct 2012.

2010 Ribbon Ridge RR Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir

Dark and perfumed, with a hint of stem spice and very ripe plummy fruit, this wine tastes expensive, the oak character pushing its way to the center of the flavor spectrum while it anchors the structure. It’s youthful and promising; give it time in the cellar to knit. Oct 2013.
